Description: Abstract The article deals with the motivation of Middle English surnames on the basis of French borrowings which having been registered as proper names as Middle English surnames appeared in the period of active formation of English system of surnames and survived up to nowadays and reflect French names of professions and serve the sources of lexical borrowings study. The linguistic value of the Middle English proper names is that they are a real treasury of knowledge of the words not being registered as common nouns, the only information about the existence of these words is their functioning in Middle English as proper names, especially the names of occupation.
